Tashlikh

On the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah, before the sun sets, it is tradition to find your way to a spring, or river, or the beach and convene with your fellow believers to perform the special Tashlich prayer. However, this practice is postponed to the next day if the first day of Rosh Hashanah coincides with Shabbat. Jewish scholars believe that just as the body is cleansed with water, so too can the soul be purified through repentance, seeking forgiveness from God.
